Academic and Behavior Policy

  • At Belle Isle Enterprise Middle School, students must be committed to maintaining high academic and behavior standards.  It is therefore necessary to establish certain academic and behavior standards for students attending the school.  The effective date for these standards is November 5, 1998.  Meeting these standards will help prepare students to be successful at the high school level.

    Grading Policy

Classroom assignments and homework are included with test scores in determining the quarterly grade in a subject.  It is expected that classroom assignments be completed in class and homework and assignments turned in by the deadline given by each teacher.  If an assignment or homework is not turned in when the teacher calls for it, the student may be given a disciplinary mark.

    Academic Criteria

All students must maintain a 2.50 yearly grade point average (GPA)  with no failing semester grades in order to remain in the program at Belle Isle Enterprise  Middle School. The transfer of  a student who achieves less than a 2.50 GPA, or receives a failing grade at the semester will be revoked for the following school year.

Student grades and performance will be monitored regularly.  At such time as it is apparent a student is failing to meet the academic requirements, the parent/guardian of the student will be contacted regarding their child’s performance.  A conference will be held to determine an Academic Support Plan to address the student’s specific academic needs. In addition,  Belle Isle Enterprise Middle School provides parents with online access to their children’s grades in all classes, and email connections on the school website for all teachers.

Students whose transfers have been revoked for academic reasons  may reapply  for admission to Belle Isle after completing one full semester at another school.  They must earn a 3.0 GPA and have no disciplinary referrals for the semester.

Students who fail to meet the academic requirements of Belle Isle Enterprise Middle School at the end of a school year may request a waiver of the policy’s requirement.  Such a waiver must be requested in writing by the parents or  guardian of the student and should be submitted to the board president of Belle Isle Enterprise Middle School Inc. (“BIEMS, Inc.”)  before June 15.  Such waiver  will be considered in an executive session of a regular or special meeting of the of directors of BIEMS,  Inc.  Waivers are considered on a case by case basis.  The board will review materials submitted by the principal and faculty members  including the student’s Academic Support Plan, discipline record, attendance record, records of meetings with parent regarding the student’s academic progress and individual team members’ view of support or not for the waiver.  The board will also consider information submitted by the parent or guardian including information regarding the student’s extracurricular activities and any other  pertinent information the parent or guardian wants to submit for the board’s consideration.  After consideration of the information in executive session, the  board will return in open session for a vote of the members present.

Readmission to the Next Grade Level

Students completing the 5th, 6th or 7th grades at the School, respectively, will be eligible for automatic readmission for the following year, if they meet each of the following academic and behavior standards:

    A.    Achieve an overall minimum 2.50 GPA for the just completed school year, with no failing grades.

    B.   The student must not have received a suspension from the School during the just completed school  year.

Students who do not meet the above standards will not be eligible for automatic readmission in the School for the next grade level.  Students not  meeting the above standards may still apply for readmission to the School for the next grade level.  The board will review materials submitted by the principal and faculty members including the student’s discipline record, attendance record, records of meetings with parents regarding the student’s academic progress and individual team members’ view of support or not for the waiver.  The board will also consider information submitted by the parent or guardian including information regarding the student’s extracurricular activities and any other  pertinent information the parent of guardian wants to submit for the board’s consideration.   After consideration of the information in executive session, the board will return in open session for a vote of the members present.  If approved, the student will be placed on the list with the other applicants in the order received.
