    Q: What is the last day of school for students?

    • The last day of school for students will be May 29 unless we have a need to add additional instructional time due to inclement weather or other emergency cancellations for the remainder of the year.

    Q: What happened?  Why is OKCPS moving the date for the last day of school again?

    • After receiving some questions about why our make-up plan looks slightly different from other districts, OKCPS re-evaluated our calendar minutes and found that we had an internal miscommunication that resulted in our plan adding up to about 14 more hours than the required minimum.
    • It was an honest mistake and the team immediately came together to consider our next steps.
    • After gathering feedback from our school staff/leadership, and after taking into account the adjustments that all OKCPS schools and our many community partners have made to accommodate the extra hour of instruction, we made the decision to end the school year for students on May 29.
    • We will reserve the additional snow days on May 30 and 31 for use in the event we have to add instructional time due to inclement weather (such as tornados) or other emergency cancellations for the remainder of the year.

    Q: Does this mean we’ll still have an hour added to end of every school day through May 29?

    • Yes, one hour will be added to every school day until the end of the instructional calendar.
    • We understand that the extra hour at the end of the day is disruptive for some, but reducing this by just a few minutes each day would not significantly change that situation. So we will leave the additional hour of instruction in place through May 29th.

    Q: I would rather have my child go to school more days than add an hour to the end of every school day. Why did you choose to remove days from end of the year instead of shortening the instructional time added to every school day?

    • The additional daily instruction maximizes learning for our students, especially since attendance is often low when classes meet after Memorial Day.
    • It also allows the Secondary Summer School for Credit Recovery to begin on June 4. (160 hours required)
    • Operationally, an additional change to the school day schedule would cause another significant disruption to our schools, our  community partners,and city officials who have already made arrangements to accommodate the additional hour of instruction through May 29.
    • We also know that students and families are anxious to start enjoying their summer break as early as possible.
    • For all of these reasons, we’ve decided to leave the additional hour of instruction in place through May 29th.

    • El último día de clases para estudiantes será el 29 de mayo a menos que tengamos que agregar tiempo de instrucción adicional debido a inclemencias del tiempo u otras cancelaciones de emergencia por el resto del año.

    ¿Qué pasó? ¿Por qué OKCPS está moviendo la fecha del último día de clases nuevamente?

    • Después de recibir algunas preguntas sobre por qué nuestro plan de recuperación de días de clases perdidos se ve ligeramente diferente de otros distritos, OKCPS reevaluó los minutos de nuestro calendario y descubrió que teníamos un error de comunicación interna que resultó en que nuestro plan sumara aproximadamente 14 horas más que el mínimo requerido.
    • Fue un error honesto y el equipo inmediatamente se unió para considerar nuestros próximos pasos.
    • Después de reunir los comentarios de nuestro personal/liderazgo escolar y después de tomar en cuenta los ajustes que todas las escuelas OKCPS y nuestros muchos socios comunitarios han realizado para acomodar la hora extra de instrucción, tomamos la decisión de finalizar el año escolar para los estudiantes en mayo 29.
    • Reservaremos los días adicionales del 30 y 31 de mayo para usarlos en caso de que tengamos que agregar tiempo de instrucción debido a las inclemencias del tiempo (como tornados) u otras cancelaciones de emergencia por el resto del año.

    ¿Esto significa que todavía tendremos una hora más hasta el final de cada día escolar hasta el 29 de mayo?

    • Sí, se agregará una hora a cada día escolar hasta el final del calendario de instrucción.
    • Entendemos que la hora extra al final del día es perjudicial para algunos, pero reducirla solo unos minutos al día no cambiaría significativamente esa situación. Así que se mantendrá la hora adicional de instrucción hasta el 29 de mayo.

    Prefiero que mi hijo vaya a la escuela más días que agregar una hora hasta el final de cada día escolar. ¿Por qué se eligió eliminar los días de fin de año en lugar de acortar el tiempo de instrucción agregado a cada día escolar?

    • Las instrucciones diarias adicionales maximizan el aprendizaje para nuestros estudiantes, especialmente debido a que la asistencia suele ser baja cuando las clases se reúnen después de Memorial Day.
    • También permite que la Escuela Secundaria de Verano para Recuperación de Créditos comience el 4 de junio (se requieren 160 horas).
    • Operativamente, un cambio adicional en el horario del día escolar causaría otra interrupción significativa en nuestras escuelas, nuestros socios comunitarios y funcionarios de la ciudad que ya han hecho arreglos para acomodar la hora adicional de instrucción hasta el 29 de mayo.
    • También sabemos que los estudiantes y las familias están ansiosos por comenzar a disfrutar de sus vacaciones de verano lo antes posible.
    • Por todos estos motivos, hemos decidido dejar la hora adicional de instrucción en vigor hasta el 29 de mayo.
